Stanley Spencer was an English painter with a naive style, influenced by the Primitivism movement. He often used an expressively distorted style of drawing. He had deep Christian beleifs and much of his work is religious and based on scenes from Biblical stories.

"The Centurian Servant" - 1914

At first critics belived that this was a depiction of a London family in the war, lying low during an air-raid and did not look into it's religious meaning. But now, it has been recognised as a devout study of the biblical narrative.

"The Resurrection, Cookham" -1924

This sets the Biblical scene of the Resurrection in Stanley's hometown of Cookham. It dipicts members of the village as characters in the scene and is thought to be one of his finest works of art.
I like the way he changes various elements of history and updates them in an almost comical way.
